The European Commission’s programme « Europe for Citizens », which covers the period 2007-2013 and which dedicates an important part of its budget to twinning activities, will now benefit also 3 countries of the Western Balkans: Croatia, Albania and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.

Another urban myth is laid to rest : contrary to what has been published or broadcast around the world these last days, Yes you can un-twin!
A number of media.including the BBC, the Wall Street Journal, the Guardian, the Daily Telegraph and FR3, quoted the mayor of Wallingford (UK) as saying that he had contacted the Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR) to ask how to “un-twin” from its twin partner town in France, and that CEMR told him that they “did not have a policy to sever ties” and “it wasn't their job” to de-twin. CEMR, it was suggested “weren't interested in sorting out the problem”.

Oswiecim (the Polish town where Auschwitz extermination camp was located), from 13 to 15 June 2009.

Twinning in the Balkans : A CEMR seminar in Sarajevo

This was the message addressed by the mayor of Mostar, Ljubo Bešlic, during the Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR)'s seminar on “Balkan countries participation to the European twinning programme”, held in Sarajevo on 27 March 2009.

European Neighbours' Day: let's bring together our citizens!

Each year, on the last Tuesday of May, inhabitants of a same building or area are invited to share a nice time around a buffet. or a luncheon with their neighbours. This event, relayed by municipalities and local associations, aims to better the “living together”, to develop a real sense of community and to promote European citizenship.
