Twinnings between Finland and Germany to tackle today's economic challenges
Every three years, the Finnish and German twinned municipalities meet in order to discuss common topics.
This year, Joensuu (Finland) hosted more than 100 participants who came together to discuss and have an exchange on how to cope the financial challenges by means of economic development.

1989-2009: what role for twinning 20 years after the fall of the iron curtain? The example of Aalborg (DK) and Riga (LV)
In 2009, we are celebrating the 20th anniversary of the decision taken by the European Parliament to create a new community programme dedicated to twinning. This important decision has made it possible for many European citizens to meet and get to know each other better, especially during the different steps of the EU enlargement.

First twinning links set up via www.twinning.org
Following its launch in the late 2008, the website www.twinning.org is reviewing its first results: new twinning partnerships are being set up thanks to the exchanges established via the website.
The French-Italian example of Chevaigné and Mergo is a good illustration of the first steps, successfully managed, towards the development of a twinning link.

Protecting Europe’s coastlines together
The twinned cities of Jurmala (Latvia), Anadia (Portugal), Cabourg (France), Eskilstüna and Gävle (Sweden), Palanga (Lithuania), Pärnu (Estonia) and Terracina (Italy) are all located on or close to the coast. Therefore, environmental management is a key priority to the municipal agenda.
In September 2006, Jurmala hosted a conference for its partners on “managing and protecting the coast”...

Helping disadvantaged members of the community
The cities of The Hague (Netherlands) and Warsaw (Poland) have been twinned since 1991. For over two years, they have pursued a joint project to provide care for drug abusers and the homeless. This was based on exchanges of experiences through seminars and working meetings.
The main theme dealt with cooperation between nongovernmental organisations active in this field, and the local authorities. The participants also discussed a range of matters such as the role of the police, psychiatric issues, the organisation of administrative services, training, etc.
In April 2005, an agreement was signed between the NGO partners of the two cities, with the support of the municipal services. In 2007, the first training courses got underway.
